‘Men of the Tyne’ arose from casual conversations with local people around past employment and history of the River Tyne.
Ray Spencer, Executive Director of The Custom’s House, was very keen to develop these conversations into a project where we would capture the stories and memories of men aged 55 or over who had worked on or near the River Tyne and document the changes they had seen over the years.
Men of the Tyne was a photography and creative writing project managed by The Customs House working in partnership with, Age UK North & South Tyneside, North and South Tyneside Council, and South Tyneside PCT.
Local writer Tom Kelly and Andrew Hagan of Mainstream Films were contracted to deliver the workshops. Ray Spencer performed the monologues and four new folk songs about the river were written by Tom Kelly & Ian Ravenscroft.
